Today there are alternative, natural-looking materials as opposed to silver fillings. Two of the alternatives we use are composite fillings and glass ionomers. Composites are a mixture of resins and nano particles designed to mimic the color of natural teeth.  Glass ionomers are also tooth-colored.  They are made form a combination of various materials, including ground glass and acrylics resins.  They are typically used for fillings near the gumline where biting pressure is not a factor.  A small amount of fluoride is released by these compounds in order to strengthen enamel in the affected area.  Occasionally, dental amalgam is still the best choice for durability in certain conditions.
